My “Chittam chittoo “

” Mamma I wish I could own a pet”, a very lovely voice fell into my ears. I knew that was my younger daughter . I told her dear we are very soon going to shift to a new place because your father’s transfer is on the cards .

Get your pet ( secrets need to be shared )

She told me that all her friend’s own a pet and that they share their secrets with them. So I am also in a very urgent need as the list of my secrets has become too big for me to keep secretly now. So understand the situation and help me in keeping my secrets.

Chunmun

We had a big mango tree in our garden. There were two squirrels on that tree. I was busy that time so I pointed out to one of them ,and said, ” Chunmun why don’t you make that cute little squirrel , the one which frequently comes to our main door, a pet of yours.

Mango tree

She liked the idea and my idea worked

She named it “Chittamchittoo”. Why??

Reason as cited by her, , according to her “great “wisdom” she felt that its name should start with the same letter “C”, just as her.

Whenever the squirrel came down the tree and rushed towards the main door , Chunmun would start telling her secrets to it of course very secretly and enjoyed the feeling of owning a pet.

Chunmun

Chunmun , now most of the time could be seen running around the tree with a bread in her hand asking Chittamchittoo to eat .

One day Chittamchittoo was missing and could not found anywhere in the garden. No movement, no signs of visibility. Ah!!! How , I feared, its fate to have fallen prey to the cat in the neighborhood .

That’s how nature is, so cruel sometimes. But they were some of the challenges of their habitats and ofcourse the danger of predation by big birds, dogs and cats.

When Chunmun realized that her pet had disappeared suddenly and couldn’t be traced, she felt a deep pain. The pain of her happy moments , (with her pet) being lost for no reason known to her.

I took her in my arms and told her that Chittamchittoo had to go to the world of stars where one has to go , when the Supreme power, the Lord of this whole universe calls them. That is inevitable and a reality every mortal being has to face . They were big words for her but the right time for understanding the phases of life.

She realized for the first time in her life , the meaning of the word death. It is really difficult (as a parent I know) to make young kids understand the realities and practicalities of life.

As humans we should always value the “value” of life. Life is very precious and just one.

Love it, to live it.

Always seeking your blessings and wishes🌷🌷🌷🌹🌹🌹🌹

  3. The innocence of a child is so precious. Kids bond very easily with animals and they feel deeply when separated. I really loved the way you explained to Chumnun about death. It is a valuable lesson, albeit a heavy one.

  4. This is such a touching story. I recall my first pet when I was 7 or 8 years old. It was a small slider turtle I named Charlie Brown (after the comic strip character). How I loved him! How much fun I had caring for him! And then that inevitable day arrived when Charlie died, I was devastated. It was my first encounter with death. My sisters and I held a funeral for Charlie and I buried him in a small Rice Krispies cereal box in the backyard. Everything changed after that. I knew life was temporary from that point on. This story of your cute little daughter and her squirrel friend has brought back some wonderful memories of my little turtle friend. Thanks for this, Reena. This was a beautiful piece to read. 🙂
