Penny wise……..

Penny wise and pound foolish!!! we all are well aware of it and have been using it quite often. We know it is basically when you are worried for triffle matters and forego greater ventures.

This is just a kind of uncalled for, undesirable and unpleasant encounter with someone whom I could call penny wise convincingly . Because what he did will also make you adjust him in the same frame.

Actually it was last month when we were going to our native place , Dehradun, that we happened to meet “him”, the lead character of the story.

During weekends or twice in a month we normally visit our native place to meet our family members . Last month, I remember it was Saturday when we ( myself, my husband and my three kids) packed our bags and set off in our car for Dehradun.

While on our way , we never fail to stop by a Punjabi Dhaba, a popular restaurant for paranthas and tea. So , it was quite natural for my husband to park the car in front of the dhaba.

My kids as usual ordered some refreshments and we had tea. We also bought a Bisleri, (mineral water bottle) as the water there was not complementary. We spent 30 bucks for that bottle. Now here the price of the bottle has to be given extra significance, 😊so that, it could help you connect to the latter part of the story.

After refreshments ,I gave my kids some water (in disposable glasses) from that BISLERI bottle . Then only, we saw a big car getting parked in front of the dhaba, and a middle-aged couple stepping out of it .They entered the restaurant and got comfortably seated next to us .Even after a while , they didn’t order anything. But then, not our concern, it was there..? free will.

But free will is free for everybody in which free encroachment invites a free trouble also.

My husband went to freshen up , and meanwhile we were waiting for him. Suddenly we saw a hand coming from behind, picking up our BISLERI bottle just in spur of a moment . It was that same middle-aged man. I saw him drinking water straight from the bottle , not even asking us. Placing back the BISLERI on the table , he said he just wanted few sips .

I told him that if he had bought it , that would have been a better idea.

He said, ” Why should I buy a full bottle when I need just few sips to drink.”. “Why are you reacting so much” .

I humbly told me ,” Sir, now if any of my three kids would ask me for a sip , I will have to buy a new bottle . More over, during these covid times ,and with running apprehensions of the third wave (kids are more vulnerable) we should be maintaining social distance, especially when we are travelling interstate.”

He simply ignored me and went to his table, muttering something to his wife.

I told him that he had saved 30 bucks but at the cost of others safety during these covid times. Nobody knows whose carrying this deadly virus.

More over the new BISLERI was bought , again by me for another 30 bucks .

  1. What a ridiculous man! Can’t believe people like that exist. “But free will is free for everybody in which free encroachment invites a free trouble also.” Powerful statement, Mam. Wonderful story with a learning.

  2. There may be instances in our life of meeting such people of unexpected bent of mind, who thinks of their ownself. Such people are to be forgiven and forgotten.
Only thing, we (including our family members) need to take care of our health & safety, which must not be compromised at any cost.
